How to Eat During the Holidays

How to Eat During the Holidays

Whenever the holidays are upon it usually means there will be tons of social gatherings!

While it's good to enjoy these times with friends and family, a few informed decisions can help minimize the holiday binge and keep you on track of your health and fitness goals.

    1. Protein and Fiber
If you know you will be having a big meal later on at night, start with protein and fiber earlier in the day.  This will keep you satisfied and will minimize the temptations to snack before dinner.
    2. Watch out for the Fancy Drinks
Drinking alcohol is the easiest and mindless way to pack on the calories.  Just keep them simple. Avoid the mixed drinks with juices and soda.  Those can easily add up and be more than your meal.
    3. Careful on the sauces, oils and spreads
Gravy, oils, butter, peanut butter, dressings can all sneak up on you.  These are all high in calories for such a small amount. If you can replace, reduce or eliminate them it will save you a lot of calories.
    4. Potlucks
If you have a house party/potlucks it's pretty hard to get an accurate count of what's exactly in the food unless you go and ask the cook(s). If possible choose simpler items like grilled meats, fish, veggies and minimize the fried and processed foods. Be wary of the deserts too as those can really add up fast. Enjoy but be accountable.
    5. Eating Out
If going out to a restaurant, check the menu ahead of time. Nutrition information is widely available these days. Have a plan on what you will eat. Set a limit and do your best to stay within it.

I don't believe in things like "cheat days" or "clean eating". This is a lifestyle for me. I won't ever sacrifice a good time with friends and family for a silly diet, BUT know there are ways to enjoy and still stay within your goals with a bit of planning.

Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.

And remember, even if you do indulge more than you were expecting, know that you can always get on track.  One "bad" meal won't make you fat just like one "healthy" meal won't make you lean. What you do over the long term will ultimately determine your success or failure.

Enjoy and eat (and drink) responsibly.
